THE FUTURE®
Pledge We pledge to SECURE THE FUTURE by establishing the Bristol-Myers Squibb HIV Research Institute. The Institute will undertake medical research focusing on women and children in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland, with the aim of enabling innovative thinking, expanding investigational research on new therapies and making such research more widely available. It will also build health research capacity through fellowship exchanges between the five participating countries and the United States. We pledge to SECURE THE FUTURE by supporting the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation Community Outreach and Education Fund. The Fund will address the serious psychological and social implications for women and children in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland who are infected with HIV or otherwise living with HIV/AIDS. It will initiate community-based programs that provide education and outreach to women and children, as well as public health fellowships in the five participating countries and the United States. We pledge, above all, to SECURE THE FUTURE by working with individuals, institutions and governments in the participating countries and elsewhere to find practical approaches to address HIV/AIDS. In so doing, we aim to offer hope and promise to women and children in need.
We make this pledge... RECOGNIZING that HIV/AIDS remains a staggering problem in sub-Saharan Africa, where, according to UNAIDS, close to 80 percent of the world's HIV/AIDS deaths have occurred; SEEING that the situation is particularly acute among women and children, who suffer extraordinarily high infection rates; UNDERSTANDING that the most effective way to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa is to partner with Africans themselves to find the most appropriate strategies for them; ACKNOWLEDGING that as a global health and personal care company, our mission is to extend and enhance human life and our strengths lie in our science, our values and our leadership role; FINDING
inspiration in our company Pledge
that, among other things, commits us to offer "a helping hand
for worthwhile causes" and to "policies and practices
that fully embody the responsibility, integrity and decency required
