A goal
of the SECURE THE FUTURE program is to share lessons
learned in a timely manner and on an ongoing basis with funders,
non-governmental organizations, businesses, academia, and
government agencies that are committed to addressing the global
HIV/AIDS epidemic. For SECURE THE FUTURE, lessons
have emerged and continue to emerge from a broad range of
activities -- from grantmaking processes to defining real
life models for providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS care in resource
limited settings to identifying the essential qualities and
skills of leaders working on the front lines.
We are
presenting these lessons through three separate but complementary
types of documents. Taken together, they reflect the passion
and will, accumulated technical know-how, and persistent and
creative problem solving that have gone into and come out
of SECURE THE FUTURE thus far:
"Our
Story" is a brief, narrative account of the
experience of the Bristol-Myers Squibb and Foundation and
its partners in conceiving, executing and continously refining
SECURE THE FUTURE from May 1999 to May 2004.

"Case
Studies" is a series of reports that provide
accessible information about the most impactful models to
emerge from the program as well as interim and final reports
on the implementation and impact evaluation of the 6 Community-Based
Treatment Support Programs and the NGO Training Institute
-- the two key legacies of the program. The series draws on
information provided by project activity and monitoring and
evaluation reports.

"Operational
Lessons" will capture the experiences of the
individuals directly involved in the management and execution
of the Community-Based Treatment Support Programs and the
NGO Institute. The lessons that will be recorded here cannot
be found in monitoring and evaluation reports. Rather, these
lessons are relayed more anecdotally and reveal how challenges
small and large, expected and wholly unanticipated were met
and overcome, or perhaps met and not overcome. This document
will attempt to faithfully record these lessons, which are
essentially about how individuals and organizations are brought
together and find ways to work together to care for people
in their communities who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
